Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about GIF.new

Is GIF.new really free?

Yes! GIF.new is 100% free to use. You can create unlimited GIFs, download them all, and use them however you want. We offer optional paid plans for longer-lasting share links, but the core GIF creation is always free.

Do I need to create an account?

No account needed! You can start creating GIFs immediately. An account is only required if you want to save share links or upgrade to a paid plan.

Is my video uploaded to your servers?

No! This is what makes GIF.new special. All processing happens directly in your browser using WebAssembly technology. Your files never leave your device unless you choose to create a share link.

What video formats are supported?

We support MP4, MOV, AVI, WebM, and MKV formats. Most video files from your phone, camera, or screen recording software will work.

What is the maximum file size?

There's no limit for creating GIFs — processing happens in your browser, so you're only limited by your device's memory. We recommend videos under 100MB for the best experience. If you want to upload a GIF to share via link, the maximum upload size is 10MB. Use our free Compress GIF tool to reduce larger files.

Why are there 5 different quality options?

Different situations call for different GIF sizes. Need the best quality for a presentation? Use Ultra Quality. Sharing in a chat? Compressed works great. We auto-generate all 5 so you can pick the perfect one.

How long do share links last?

Free share links last 24 hours. Starter plan links last 7 days. Pro plan links are permanent and never expire.

Can I use GIF.new offline?

Yes! GIF.new is a Progressive Web App (PWA). Install it on your device and you can create GIFs even without an internet connection. Share links require internet, but downloading works offline.

How do I trim my video before making a GIF?

After uploading, check the "Show editor" option. This lets you set start/end times, adjust speed, and even reverse the video before creating your GIF.

Why is my GIF file so large?

GIF is an older format with limited compression. Try a smaller quality preset, shorter duration, or lower resolution. The "Ultra Compressed" option creates the smallest files. If you need to share a GIF via link (10MB upload limit), use our free Compress GIF tool to shrink it first.
